Clave
\nThere are many styles of music in the world<\/p>\n
that use twelve and sixteen-space matrix\u2019s to
\ncreate rhythm. So what separates one from
\nanother? The answer is both cultural and
\nenvironmental, but the end result is a
\nfingerprint that uniquely identifies the
\norigins of the music.
\nIn the contemporary styles we will explore in this course, the phrase that is the key to understanding the music lies in the rhythmic pattern called clave (pronounced \u201cclah\u2019- vay\u201d).<\/p>\n
Clave is a five-note phrase that repeats
\nafter every fourth down beat. The clave
\nphrase syncopates the pulse and begins to add
\nswing to the music. Clave is the key to
\nunderstanding how Afro- Cuban music is
\narranged and flows. There are many types of
\nclave rhythms each of them specific for that
\ncertain style of music.
\nClave is much more then just a rhythmic
\nphrase that must be learned though. It is a
\nconcept that is fundamental to Afro-Latin
\nmusic. Clave is to Afro- Cuban music as the
\nbackbone is to the human body or roots are to
\na tree. Without it, a human or a tree just
\ncouldn\u2019t stand up! But clave is also a
\ncomplicated concept to understand, especially
\nfor those who have never had an upbringing
\nthat was infused with Afro- Cuban music. Here
\nare some very important points about clave
\nthat will serve you well though:
