Description: Rhythm 101 is about learning how to feel the rhythm in music in order to create spontaneous and unique counter rhythms inside the music. We will focus on Afro-Cuban rumba, bembe, and salsa styles, with special emphasis on feeling and playing the different clave patterns, kata and palito, as well as the drum parts and accompanying songs. All drum and percussion instruments provided.

Audience: Intermediate level drummers (1-3 years playing experience) who are interested in learning more about traditional Afro-Latin styles of music.

Description: This class focuses on playing bomba, bembe, and macuta Afro-Latin drumming styles. You will also learn the singing parts that accompany drum play in these traditional music forms. Singing provides both the melodic and rhythmic base for the drums to develop their own dialog and conversations. Classes are structured to progress over several phases:


  1. Warm-up exercises focused on isolation and speed development

  2. Employ 6/8 yuba support and lead rhythms to assist the learning of songs and breaks that are vital to understanding and playing bomba music
